Returning to You: When Life Has Pulled You Away

Speaking to the Soul

Have you ever looked up and realized… you can’t remember the last time you felt like yourself?

You’ve been doing all the things — working, showing up for everyone, checking the boxes — and somewhere in the mix, you got buried. You squeezed your eyes tightly, trying not to succumb to the hundred-mile-an-hour winds of your to-do list, and when you opened them again, you realized you were lost and stuck, feeling disconnected, tired, and emotionally numb. It’s not your fault. Life pulls us in every direction, and sometimes the hardest person to come home to is ourselves.

A Soft Invitation Back to You

The good news is, there’s always a way back home. Diana “Dorothy” Ross taught us that! The journey may not be free of tears. It will undoubtedly require self-compassion, vulnerability, and facing the Wiz (the scary thing) head-on. More good news… the scary thing ends up not being so frightening after you face it. So let’s try it.

Coming home to yourself might look like:

  • Saying “no” without guilt

  • Sitting in silence, even when your mind resists

  • Naming your needs — out loud

  • Letting your softness lead for once

It doesn’t always look graceful. In fact, most times you’ll feel like a giraffe stumbling around in high heels if you haven’t taken this type of stroll down the yellow brick road, and that’s okay as long as you get back to the most important person — you.

Reflection

Take 5-10 minutes to reflect on the following:

  1. What parts of you have you been neglecting?

  2. What’s one thing you miss about yourself?

  3. What would it feel like to reconnect without needing to perform?

Affirmation to Carry Forward

“I am allowed to return to myself, without apology, without permission, and without shame.”
